Our chief end is to glorify and enjoy God forever.”

Holy Week

Ann Weems

Holy is the week…

Holy, consecrated, belonging to God…

We move from hosannas to horror

with the predictable ease

of those who know not what they do.

Our hosannas sung,

Our palms waved,

Let us go with passion into this week.

It is a time to curse the fig trees that do not yield fruit.

It is a time to cleanse our temples of any blasphemy.

It is a time to greet Jesus as the Lord’s Anointed One,

to lavishly break our alabaster

and pour perfume out for him

without counting the cost.

It is a time for preparation…

The time to give thanks and break bread is upon us.

The time to give thanks and drink of the cup is imminent.

Eat, drink, remember:

On this night of nights, each one must ask,

as we dip our bread in the wine,

“Is it I?”

And on that darkest of days, each of us must stand

beneath the tree

and watch the dying

if we are to be there

when the stone is rolled away.

The only road to Easter morning

Is through the unrelenting shadows of that Friday.

Only then will the alleluias be sung;

Only then will the dancing begin.

From the Pastor….

Just like the greening grass in the yards lots of things are springing up here at First Presbyterian Church.  These last three months have been filled with firsts as I get to know the congregation, your history as a faith community as well as settle into the rhythms of the church and community.  All this newness brings to mind the words of the prophet Isaiah,[*]

“Look, I am about to do something new. Now it begins to happen! Do you not recognize it?
Yes, I will make a road in the desert and paths in the wilderness.

Spring is a time of transition and change, like a spring bulb with the first green leaves breaking ground, new ideas and suggestions are being shared.  The Session is talking about congregational activities, events for the summer and beginning to think and plan for the rest of the year.  It is exciting to see the openness of the Session to think “outside the box.”  It is the presence of the Holy Spirit moving in a congregation, members as well as leadership that opens us to new ideas and new opportunities as well as new ways of looking at the familiar.   The congregation has graciously accepted some changes in worship during this Lenten season and I hope that your worship has been enhanced as a result.

As the Session and I begin to look toward the future we will be reviewing the information gathered from the congregation prior to your pastoral search.  These comments and ideas will inform the Session and various Teams as we look to the future.   I welcome your comments and ideas about your vision for the future of FPC and would be happy to visit over lunch or at your home, feel free to contact me to arrange a time to visit.

I look forward with a sense of anticipation as Holy Week approaches which begins with Palm/ Passion Sunday.  It will be a special morning with a palm processional, the Presbyterian Pealers providing special music and our youth providing a dramatic reading during in worship.  During the service on April 9th we will not only remember Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, but also his sacrifice for us.  We remember Christ’s Last Supper with his disciples before he gave himself up for us as we worship together and celebrate Communion at our Maundy Thursday service.

Easter morning the Deacons are organizing the 9:00 a.m.  Brunch, you can read the details elsewhere in the newsletter.   I look forward to seeing our beautiful sanctuary filled with flowers as we celebrate on Easter Sunday that death did not have that last word, that Christ’s resurrection defeated death and secured salvation for all who put their trust and faith in him.

April brings several opportunities for service and outreach some new and some familiar.  Habitat for Humanity is actively working on the house at 315 Nebraska Street and volunteers are welcome to help especially on Saturday’s. If you want more information talk to Mark Hammer or Greg Worner or see the article in the newsletter.   FPC will be providing a meal for the Habitat workers on April 29th.   April 23 has been set for spring roadside clean-up, more details will be coming in the next few weeks.  This will be an opportunity for the congregation to be visible in the community so I hope you will save the date and plan to participate.

Spring is a time of new beginnings and renewal, I give thanks for the opportunity to be a part of the FPC family and look forward to the Spirit inspired new things which will spring up and bloom in our midst.

Grace and peace,

Pastor Teresa
