CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR GRADUATING SENIORS
Congratulations to our graduating seniors from Wayne High; Sarah Wibben, Beau Bowers, Madison Stenka, Shea Abraham and Layne Hesse from Pender High School. Join us for worship on Sunday, May 6th as we present the seniors with gifts from the Sewing Souls and Presbyterian Women. Each student will receive a fleece blanket to remind them of their church family as they move on to college and post high school pursuits.
ELEANOR EDWARDS SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED ON MAY 6th
The Discipleship Team and the Session are pleased to award the Eleanor Edwards Senior Scholarship to Sarah Wibben, Beau Bowers, Madison Stenka of Wayne High School and Layne Hesse of Pender High School.
It is appropriate as we give scholarships in her name that we should be reminded of Eleanor’s love of children and teaching and how FPC received a gift that continues to bless the youth of our community.
Eleanor Edwards was a career elementary school teacher in the Nebraska Public Schools. Her first teaching job was at the one room school in District 18 where she taught 31 students from first to eighth grades for two years. After a variety of teaching jobs and a short time at the ASC office, Eleanor and her mother moved to Wayne in 1944. Eleanor began at Wayne Community schools where she taught 6th grade for 28 years. Eleanor was well respected by students and colleagues and her classrooms were well run. Eleanor retired from the Wayne School district in May of 1973 after 45 years of teaching.
After moving to Wayne Eleanor transferred her membership from the Welsh Zion Congregational Church west of Carroll to FPC in 1947. Eleanor was an active member, she taught Sunday school, served as church school superintendent. She was a ruling elder and president of the United Presbyterian Women; she was awarded an honorary PW membership in 1984.
Eleanor was active in the community she was a member of the Wayne Business and Professional Women, Wayne Area Retired Teachers and Delta Kappa Gamma. She liked to read, do needlework, watch sports and musicals and enjoyed traveling in the United States and Canada.
Eleanor died in 1984 and endowed the Presbyterian Church with a gift of $11,000.00. Once the account had grown with the accumulation of interest the Session decided that a book scholarship of $50.00 would be given to all FPC graduating seniors. Currently graduating FPC seniors are encouraged to make an application for the scholarship which has grown to $350.
We give thanks to God for Eleanor’s desire and ability to teach and shape the lives of so many children and that through this scholarship Eleanor continues to impact the lives of young people as they further their education. We also give thanks for the forethought and guidance of the Session and their fiscal management through the years so that Eleanor’s gift can be perpetuated.
From the Pastor….
The grass is greening, the dandelions appearing, the trees are budding, perhaps spring has finally arrived. As we see the spring shrubs and flowers beginning to show their first color we know it will not be long until we see the full display of God’s handiwork in beautiful spring flowers and trees. Like the natural world around us the church calendar is budding with events for May, be sure to read your Presbytidings for all the details.
We look forward to celebrating with our graduating seniors, Sarah Wibben, Beau Bowers, Madison Stenka, Shea Abraham from Wayne High School and Layne Hesse from Pender High School. As children of this congregation we celebrate this milestone with them and their families. We will continue to hold them in prayer as they move forward with plans to further their education, enter the workforce, military service or other endeavors. We wish each one of our graduates success in life; however, success isn’t always measured by material or financial gains. Let us pray that each of our graduates may find success as defined by this paraphrase of Proverbs 3:3-4;
God, empower each graduate to choose a life of steadfast love and faithfulness
so they will find favor with you and people and enjoy a good reputation.
We pray also for the parents of our graduates who no doubt also experience profound changes as their children become increasingly independent. Prior to worship on May 6th the graduates will be recognized, awards and gifts presented. A special reception to honor the graduates will follow worship. Please join us for worship and as we celebrate with our graduates moving from one stage of life and entering another.
Our final Super Sunday for this spring will be May 13th please join us at 9:00 a.m. for a time of singing some of our favorite Sunday School songs and hymns as well as a time of learning about the birthday of the Church, Pentecost.
Mother’s Day is also the 13th so don’t forget to say thank-you to the women in your life, mothers and other women who have guided and shaped you, encouraged and disciplined you.
On May 20th we will be celebrating Pentecost and our confirmands will be joining the church. Don’t forget to wear red as part of our celebration! This day will be another time of celebration as a year of study and preparation culminates in the confirmands joining the church. A special fellowship time will also follow worship on the 20th to congratulate our new members. Memorial Day on the 28th completes a month full of celebration, remembrance, as well as looking toward the future.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Teresa
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!
God took the fragrance of a flower…
The majesty of a tree…
The gentleness of morning dew…
The calm of a quiet sea…
The beauty of the twilight hour…
The soul of a starry night…
The grace of a bird in flight…
Then God fashioned from these things
A creation like no other,
And when his masterpiece was through
He called it simply – Mother.
Herbert Farnham

Each student who desired to be confirmed wrote their own faith statement. April 23rd the students went before the Session to share their statement of faith. PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN SPRING GATHERING UPDATE
Presbyterian Women, with the help of Thurston’s PW, hosted a Homestead Presbytery’s Spring Gathering on Saturday April 7th. The gathering was attended by women from Fremont, Norfolk, Wayne, Thurston, Tekamah, as well as members of the Presbytery Co-coordinating team from Lincoln. The theme for the day was “Arise, shine, your light has come!” Pastor Teresa shared an overview of the importance of women’s work in the church for mission and leadership development during her message. She also gave a glimpse into the 2018-2019 Horizons Bible Study entitled “God’s Promise.”
In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the current structure of Presbyterian Women stories were shared by the participants of women who had been instrumental in their local PW groups and churches. Wayne recognized Jackie Owens, who has been a member of Presbyterian Women for 62 years, first at Bethany Presbyterian in Carroll and now here in Wayne. We also recognized Bonnie Lund and Sandra Metz who made significant contributions to Wayne’s PW.
The group watched a video presentation from Kris Peterson of Leadership Harbor, entitled “Make Your Light Shine.” Women were encouraged to set goals, challenge themselves and let their light shine in their churches and communities.
Reading awards were presented and a new reading list was distributed. Karen Johnson and Jackie Owens received their reading awards. As a mission project the attendees brought children’s books to be given to Haven House, about 30 books and some small stuffed animals were collected. Sewing Souls added brightly colored children’s pillows and tag blankets to the items going to Haven House.
The Presbyterian Women gather for a national meeting every two years, this year the meeting will be in July in Louisville, Kentucky. Pastor Teresa was commissioned to attend the national meeting.

POSSIBLE SUMMER BIBLE/BOOK STUDY
Pastor Teresa is considering a study for the month of June. The group would meet on Thursdays at 11:00 a.m. for study. Those that desire could bring a lunch and stay for fellowship following the study time. One book under consideration for the study is “Falling Upward” by Richard Rohr. According to notes, the book challenges the thinking about the second half of life which most of us tend to relate to as getting old, dealing with health issues, and letting go of life, but the whole thesis of the book is the opposite, sharing how the second half of life can and should be full of spiritual growth and richness. If you are a Kindle user you can get a sample of the book from Amazon. Pastor Teresa would be interested in hearing about other books on theology or spirituality that you have enjoyed. Please let Pastor Teresa know if this format would be of interest to you. Thank-you.
