Welcome to February, a month that celebrates love. Retail stores are full of reminders that Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. There are plenty of gift choices to reflect your love and affection; candy in heart shaped boxes, as well flowers, stuffed animals to mention a few. Yet stuffed animals, flowers, or boxes of chocolates are just a token of our love. Love or lack of love is reflected not just one day in February but every day in how we speak to each other, how we live in families and in communities.
One of the most famous biblical passages on love comes from the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Corinthian church:
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
(1st Corinthians 13:4-7)
These words are often used in wedding ceremonies and are of course important to remember in a marriage or in any relationship yet Paul’s original audience wasn’t a couple, but rather a community of believers. A church that was challenged internally by divisions about spiritual gifts, as well as differences in social status and influences from the culture around them. Paul wrote to answer questions posed from the believers regarding the Lord’s Supper, worship, marriage and other issues in the community. Paul’s letter addressed these problems but was also a letter of encouragement.
In 1st Corinthians chapter 12 Paul discusses spiritual gifts, the diversity of gifts and how they are given for the good of the community. The Apostle also reminded the believers that they were the body of Christ, a body which was diverse, but unified in Christ, a body that should look at each other in love. Paul’s words emphasize that love is not self-seeking, but rather puts others first. Being loving doesn’t mean overlooking wrong doing however it does mean offering each other grace, patience, trust, and forgiveness.
How would our lives be different if we were to put into action Paul’s words from chapters 12 and 13; recognizing God’s gifts in each person, seeking to make each person feel valued for their abilities, and that their gifts were needed in their home, church and community. How would our lives be different if we recognized that our diversity of gifts, as well as gender and ethnicity are to be received with thanksgiving rather than a way to organize into opposing groups. Paul’s words are as valuable to us today as they were for the Corinthian church, we are to receive and build up one another with love every day, for as Paul wrote love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

“At the Crossroads”
Evening Lenten Services
Begin March 6th
Lenten services will include a fellowship meal of soup and sandwiches beginning at 6:00 p.m. followed by a time of worship. This year during our Lenten services we will be meeting some of the people involved in the story of the Passion of Christ. Many people when they encountered Christ came to a crossroad and had to decide which way to go. Each week we will hear from an individual who encountered Christ and the choices they made. Some chose well, some did not, the stories of each of these experiences help us to know what to do and what not to do when we encounter similar crossroads in our own lives. It is hoped that each week will reveal how Christ and his cross lead us to discern God’s will for us.

April 18th – Maundy Thursday with communion

LENTEN SUPPERS AND SERVICES
Our church family will gather for weekly suppers during Lent, beginning on Wednesday, March 13th, at 6:00pm. (Watch for the sign-up sheets on the Opportunity Table in Fellowship Hall.) Following the suppers, we will gather at 7:00pm for Lenten service.
LOOKING AHEAD TO LENT & EASTER
Observe a holy Lenten season this year.
- We will begin Lent with an Ash Wednesday service March 6th at 6:30pm.
- Lenten services & soup suppers will begin weekly on Wednesdays, beginning on March 13 – April 10th.
- Palm Sunday Service on Sunday, April 14th at 10:00am.
- The Maundy Thursday service with communion will be held Thursday evening, April 18th.
- Celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord at our Easter Sunday service with our traditional Easter Brunch beginning at 9:00am on Sunday, April 21st.
COMMUNION
We will celebrate the Lord’s Supper on Sunday, February 3, 2019. Jim Paige will serve as the Communion Elder.
PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN & SEWING SOULS
- The Presbyterian Women meeting scheduled for Wednesday, February 6th will be rescheduled at a later date.
- Sewing Souls next meeting will be announced at a later date.
PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN LENDING LIBRARY
Most of you have probably noticed over the years that there are shelves of books on the south wall of our fellowship hall. These volumes are the accumulation of books donated and bought by the Presbyterian women of First Presbyterian Church. We encourage all of you to take advantage of the shelves and borrow and read any of the titles you find there. Many of the titles are current publications and are found on the current reading list for the Presbyterian Women of our Presbytery.
Most books (95%) of them have pockets and cards in the books for check out. There is a basket on the shelf for you to deposit the cards. We ask that you sign the card and put a date as to when you are borrowing the book. When finished you can leave the book on the pew bench next to the shelf. A drop box will be coming! If there is not card or pocket in the book, just write your name and a brief title on the sign-up sheet on the shelf by the basket.
As months go by, different members of our church will be providing book reviews of titles they have read from our library. We will also give our recommendations and alert you to any new titles. We look forward to questions, suggestions for new titles and thoughts on the books here. ENJOY!

ROTARY BAKED POTATO FEED
The annual Rotary Potato Bake & Dessert Bar will be held Sunday, 2/10 from 11:00am-1:00pm at the Wayne City Auditorium. Adults $6 ($7 at the door), Children (8 & under) $3. Hot dogs will be available for the kids.
FPC YOUTH GROUP
Youth Group will meet Wednesday, February 13th and 27th this month. Contact Gail McCorkindale or Ronda Ras for more details.
HOMESTEAD PRESBYTERY
Our presbytery will gather on Saturday, 2/16, beginning at 10:00am, at Lincoln, Nebraska.
COMMUNITY CHAPEL SERVICE
Pastor Teresa will lead chapel services at Careage on Sunday, February 24th at 1:30pm. All are welcome to join her there.
SESSION
The Session will gather on Monday, February 25, at 7:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.
