LENTEN SUPPERS & SERVICES
Our church family will continue to gather for weekly Wednesday night suppers at 6:00pm during Lent ending on Wednesday, April 10th. The supper sign-up sheets are on the Opportunity Table in Fellowship Hall. Afterward, we will gather for Lenten services at 7:00pm. All are welcome.
HOLY WEEK SCHEDULE
- Palm Sunday, April 14th at 10:00am
- Maundy Thursday with communion: April 18th at 7:00pm
- Easter Sunday brunch: April 21st at 9:00am (Signup sheet is on the Opportunity Table)

EASTER LILIES
Please help us decorate our sanctuary for Easter by bringing your Easter lilies and placing them on the chancel. If you would like to have an acknowledgment in the bulletin on Easter day, please give Jenny the information.
One Great Hour of Sharing is the church saying, “We’ll be there when you need us.” Since 1949, Presbyterians have joined with millions of other Christians through One Great Hour of Sharing to share God’s love with people experiencing need. Your gifts support ministries of disaster response, refugee assistance and resettlement, food for the hungry, and community development that helps people find safe refuge, start new lives, and work together to strengthen their families and communities. The One Great Hour of Sharing offering will be collected on Palm Sunday & Easter Sunday.
From the Pastor….
During the Lenten season we’ve been talking about crossroads; times of decision, some choices are easy, others are very hard, some choices must be made quickly and others you might have time to consider carefully. Jesus encountered many crossroads and was always able to choose God’s way for his life. Jesus’ ministry was among those who were most vulnerable, not the rich and powerful. Jesus preached good news to the poor and release to the captives. As a faith family, we are reminded of our call to compassion to the poor, as well as those who find themselves vulnerable due to circumstances beyond their control such as the recent flooding and blizzard in Nebraska and other midwestern states.
It’s important to pray for our neighbors and friends however it is also important that we act to help where and how we can. One way of supporting those who are hurting whether in Nebraska or around the world is through our financial support the PC(USA) One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS- for more information see http://www.presbyterianmission.org/oghs) offering which will be received April 14th and 21st. OGHS is the single, largest way that Presbyterians come together every year to work for a better world.
Did you know that the OGHS offering supports three ministry programs of the church; Presbyterian Disaster, Presbyterian Hunger and Self-Development of People, a thumbnail sketch of each program and the allocation for each follows:
PRESBYTERIAN DISASTER ASSISTANCE (PDA)
- works alongside communities as they recover after the devastation of natural or human-caused disasters and offers support for refugees.
- receives 32% of funds raised from OGHS.
- PDA is the emergency and refugee program of the PC(USA). Recently PDA has assisted 28 states following natural and human- caused disasters including flooding in Montana, Ohio, Maryland, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Hawaii; tornados in Alabama, Virginia and Iowa; wildfires in Californian and Colorado as well as ongoing response to Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria.
- Note – As a result of recent flooding in Nebraska Presbyterian Disaster Assistance has been in the Presbytery and we await their assessment and report.

PRESBYTERIAN HUNGER PROGRAM (PHP)
- Takes action to alleviate hunger, care for creation, and the systemic causes of poverty so all may be fed.
- receives 36% of funds raised from OGHS.

SELF-DEVELOPMENT OF PEOPLE (SDOP)
- Invests in communities responding to their experiences of oppression, poverty and injustice and educates Presbyterians about the impact of these issues
- receives 32% of funds raised from OGHS.

This year with the after effects of the flooding still very visible we have an opportunity to help our neighbors and friends by designating offerings to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance for support of flood recovery. Donations for flood recovery should be addressed to account DR000191 U.S. Flooding (see related article which follows for more information). Let us continue to hold in prayer those impacted by flooding and the blizzard as well as all the volunteers helping with recovery and be open to other ways we might assist in the recovery. Sharing our gifts and working together we can share God’s love with our neighbors in need as they put their lives back in order.

Nebraska Strong; Homestead Presbytery Response to Flooding
A National Response Team from Presbyterian Disaster Assistance was recruited for Homestead Presbytery in response to the flooding. The team has arrived and visited many of the affected communities, assessed needs, and met with local authorities. The Presbytery office will be informing the Presbytery after the PDA assessment of the needs and ways to help.
Homestead Presbytery will be requesting a $7,500 Initial Assistance Grant from PDA as a resource for to respond to the needs in the Presbytery. These initial grants allow for broad disaster response support for congregations and communities. The Presbytery needs a team of about 5 or 6 people to begin working on our response as a presbytery, especially people from the communities that were affected. Individuals or churches can donate to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. You may want to designate your contributions to a couple of different PDA accounts:
DR000148 — Initial Response Account. This designated account is for general relief and undesignated program support. It supplements the One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) offering and enables members and congregations to make general designations to use funds where they are needed as determined by PDA.
DR000191 — U.S. Flooding. This designated account supplements the One Great Hour of Sharing offering and enables members and congregations to support the PC(USA) response to episodes of flooding within the United States. Funds into this account will help communities overall relief and recovery efforts associated with flooding to include assessments, clean-up efforts, and rebuilding.
PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN
- The Presbyterian Women will meet Wednesday, April 3rd at 4:00pm in Fellowship Hall.
- Presbyterian Women’s Spring Gathering will be held on Saturday, April 27th at the Fremont Presbyterian Church. This year’s theme is “God’s Promise: How to Live Faithfully in our Divisive World.” The cost is $8. Please contact Karen Johnson for further details.
- The Homestead Presbyterian Women will be collecting baby layette items for the Pine Ridge Reservation at the Spring Gathering. You are invited to donate any of the following items: Onesies, sleepers, outfits, socks, bibs, receiving blankets, disposable diapers, and little books/toys/rattles.
COMMUNITY CHAPEL SERVICES
Pastor Teresa will lead chapel services at the following locations throughout April:
- CAREAGE CHAPEL Pastor will lead chapel at Careage on Sunday, April 7th at 1:30pm.
- BROOKDALE CHAPEL Pastor Teresa will lead Brookdale Chapel on Wednesday, April 10th at 3:30pm.
COMMUNION
We will celebrate the Lord’s Supper on the following days:
- Sunday, April 7th at 10:00am (Communion elder, Jim Curtiss)
- Maundy Thursday, April 18th at 7:00pm
HIGHWAY CLEAN-UP
We will do our spring highway cleanup after worship on Sunday, April 7th (rain date: April 28th). Please wear your work clothes to church that day. We will depart after worship to our stretch of Highway 35 (markers 33-35 east of Wayne). This is a great time for families to do a service project together. With plenty of help, this project can take less than one hour.
DEACONS
The Deacons will meet Tuesday, April 9th at 4:15pm. Please contact Pastor Teresa if you are unable to attend.
YOUTH GROUP
Youth Group will meet Wednesday, April 10th at 8:00pm and Wednesday, April 24th at 7:30pm this month. Contact Gail McCorkindale or Ronda Ras for more details.
ELEANOR EDWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS APPLICATION DUE
The Eleanor Edwards scholarship application are due to the church office by Friday, April 19th. Scholarships will be awarded on Sunday, May 5th, followed by a reception for the graduates.
SESSION
The Session will meet Monday, April 22nd, at 7:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Please submit an action items to Jane O’Leary or Pastor Teresa by Friday, April 12th.
SEWING SOULS
On Wednesday, April 24th at 2:00 Sewing Souls will meet to start new projects and continue projects such as pillowcases for children in the hospital. Come join us no matter what your sewing skills are.
GRADUATION SUNDAY
Join us on Sunday, May 5th at we recognize our high school graduates. Maysn Dorey and Zach Urbanec will be graduating from Wayne High, and Solomon Peitz is graduating from Wakefield High. Following the service, there will be a cake fellowship. All are welcome!
SYNOD SCHOOL
Want to go to camp as a family this summer? Plan to Join Presbyterians from all over the Midwest at Buena Vista College, in Storm Lake, IA July 21-26, 2019. Plan on a week of inspiring worship, educational speakers, arts and crafts, and lots of new friends for the entire family. There is programming available for every age and every interest. SUMMER CAMP @ CALVIN CREST
Summer is coming! We promise! And what better way to spend your summer than going to camp learning about Jesus with friends? Calvin Crest is officially open for summer camp registration: http://www.calvincrest.org/summer-camp/ Pick out your week of camp and register your kid(s) or grandkid(s). Adherents of our church may apply for a scholarship to pay ½ of the cost of registration. Additional scholarships, based on financial need may be available. Please ask Jenny or Pastor Teresa for an application.
GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP
Have you lost a loved one recently? The grief can be hard to handle. Please consider joining the Providence Medical Grief Support group. We will meet Tuesday evenings (April 8-May 13) from 6:30-8:15pm. Snacks are provided. For more information call 402-375-7923.
