From the Pastor…

In my opinion the weather this past week has been ideal, temperatures in the low 80’s and high 70’s and cool nights. I enjoy many aspects of fall, the cool weather, the trees changing colors, pumpkins, gourds, and mums. A couple of other good reasons to like October include National Pumpkin Spice Day (Oct. 1st), enjoy a pumpkin spice latte and National Cinnamon Roll Day (Oct. 4th) — both good reasons to love October.

Another event which happens annually on the first Sunday in October is World Communion Sunday. On this Sunday Christians around the globe remember Jesus Christ is the Head of the Church and that every Christian Church and any denomination that promotes Christian unity are one.

The origin of this celebration was the idea of Dr. Hugh Thompson Kerr, pastor of Shadyside Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh. Dr. Kerr was serving as moderator of the General Assembly when he came up with the idea in 1930. Dr. Kerr’s younger son, Rev. Dr. Donald Kerr, himself pastor emeritus of the Roland Park Presbyterian Church in Baltimore, stated his father had attempted to bring churches together in service of Christian unity, and the idea grew from there. World Communion Sunday arose from the celebration at the Division of Stewardship at Shadyside.

The concept of World Communion Sunday spread slowly; it wasn’t until the Second World War that the spirit of the service caught hold. In a war-torn world, the service of Worldwide Communion symbolized the effort to hold things together in a spiritual sense.^{^[*]} Thecelebration was adopted in the U.S. and the organization, now known as the National Council of Churches, started endorsing and promoting the event to churches worldwide.

World Communion Sunday reminds us that despite cultural, traditional, linguistic, and denominational differences all Christians are one in Jesus Christ. As Christians we are in relationship with each other, sharing our lives and the enabling grace of Jesus Christ.^[†] On the first Sunday of October many congregations choose to include in their worship music and symbols from around the world. This helps us move past geographical and denominational boundaries to celebrate our unity in Christ as well as includes diversity in worship and practice.

World Communion Sunday celebrates our unity in Jesus Christ. As people of faith around the world, we participate in the Lord’s Supper as Jesus taught us. Some congregations use a variety of breads representative of God’s people around the world. ^[‡] As we celebrate communion, let us be mindful that we are the body of Christ, we are the people of God, and sharing our lives together we grow in fellowship, love and grace.

WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2023

Sunday, October 1^st is World Communion Sunday, a day when we share the Bread of life and the Cup of salvation alongside Christians in all different traditions, around the world. The communion elder will be Mark Hammer.

FPC DEACONS TO HOST COAT GIVE-AWAY: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 7^TH

Saturday, October 7^th, the First Presbyterian Church Deacons will be hosting a coat give away from 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Coats for all ages will be available, the selection will be limited to stock on hand. In addition to coats there is a limited selection of hats, scarves and gloves. Each “shopper” can select one coat and accessories, parents may select for their children. The event is open to all area individuals and families. The Deacon’s will be setting up on Friday afternoon October 6^th with volunteers. On October 12^th we will return the coats to the basement. If you are able to assist please contact Pastor Teresa.

SPECIAL MUSIC

On Sunday, October 8^th during worship we will enjoy a clarinet ensemble featuring Karl Kolbeck, Dr. Jim Lindau, Joyce Reeg, Jay O’Leary, Amy Wordemann, Brad Weber, JoAnne Lundahl, and Josie Brezenski.

STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN: OCTOBER 15-31, 2023

FPC Stewardship’s Campaign will begin October 15^th and run through October 31^st. During this time you will receive a mailing from the financial secretary and the Session. It is hoped that you will reflect on the information you receive and consider prayerfully your support of First Presbyterian Church. Your support financially, as well as your participation, are very important in the life of this congregation and will allow us to continue to move forward.

“STEPPING ON”

The Northeast Nebraska Public Health Department is beginning a fall prevention program in October at the First Presbyterian Church. “Stepping On“is a 7-week (one 2-hour session per week) falls prevention program conducted by trained leaders, and is specially designed for adult learners. Stepping On has been researched and proven to reduce falls by 31%! Stepping On brings together the life experience of its participants and the expertise of community professionals. If you are interested call 402-375-2200 about the program.

From the Pastor…..

One of the things I really enjoy is cultivating the flower beds around my house. Since I moved to Wayne in 2017 (5 ½ years already) I have planted flowers, annuals, perennials, and shrubs in the yard. I like to use varieties that will attract butterflies and bees. For several weeks in the spring, I haunt the hardware and garden center stores looking for plants to add around the house in pots for the patio and the front step.

After the planting is completed then there is the watching and waiting for the seeds to germinate and push up through the ground or see if the plants will thrive in their new home. Best of all is finally cutting flowers for a bouquet.

A couple of weeks ago I finished mowing the lawn and took time to sit and cool off on the patio. I was delighted to see several varieties of butterflies coming by and fueling up on marigolds, clematis and other flowering plants, a nice buffet. I also saw bees, a hummingbird moth, and a few other critters I couldn’t identify, all enjoying the flowers along with me.

As I sat watching this activity I was reminded of the important role we have to care for the earth. In Genesis 2:17 the Bible tells us “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” Adam was given important work and we are to continue the work of taking care of the “garden” in which we live, the earth suffers or benefits because of actions we take or fail to take. There are large scale actions which must be orchestrated by industry, governments and nations. However, there are things each of us can do like recycle. Here in Wayne we can recycle paper, metal, glass, plastic bags, batteries, and printer cartridges (Check out the Wayne Green Team website for details – Green Team | Wayne, NE – Official Website (cityofwayne.org). September 23^rd is the Wayne Green Team’s Electronic recycling event. If you have electronics you want to dispose of take advantage of this event to keep those items out of the landfills.

In addition, keep an Eco-Friendly Lawn, try these tips from the Wayne Green Team. Develop deep, healthy roots for your lawn by watering deeply and infrequently, and preferably at night. Watering during the day leads to higher evaporation and inefficient use of water.

Leave grass long and avoid cutting off more than 1/3 of the height of the grass. This keeps your soil in shade and reduces evaporation. It also allows your grass to out-compete weeds.
Use a mulching (higher) setting on your lawnmower and leave clippings on the lawn. The clippings decompose and allow for recycling of nutrients.
Overseed lawn in the fall. Newer grass will develop strong roots over the winter.

In our lawn and gardens, we can promote biodiversity and help local wildlife, by choosing plants that will encourage bees, butterflies, wasps, and other pollinators to visit. Add pollinator friendly plants to your yard and garden such as zinnias, coneflowers, lavender, both you and the pollinators will enjoy them. The pollinators aid in the pollination of plants to set fruits and seeds. We’re a part of the “circle of life” and as humans we can have a positive or negative impact. Let’s take care of the earth so it can take care of us.

The following poem reminds us of the mystery and miracle of earth and the deep connection we have with the land, water, flora, and all of creation. The poem was written by Joyce Borger, senior editor of Reformed Worship and resource development specialist at the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship. The poem was in the June 2023 edition of Reformed Worship.

A Prayer for the Flourishing of Bees

Creator,
We bless you for the cycle of the earth:
for my kitchen scraps that became compost to nourish the soil,
for the soil that harbored the seed,
and the sun that awakened it, enticing a flower to burst into bloom,
which in turn nourishes the bee darting from plant to plant.
A necessary link in your created order.

(There are too few bees these days.)

Creator,
Forgive us for how we have poisoned the earth
and killed entire populations of bees.
Forgive us that, because of our desire for beautiful yards,
we have filled the soil with pesticides
and killed off the very plants that bees have needed to thrive.
Forgive us that, in the name of progress,
we have turned lifegiving land into lifeless concrete,
we have turned fresh water into cancer superspreaders,
and cut down swaths of forests and sides of mountains.
Forgive us for not giving voice to the cries of the land
or amplifying the voice of those most affected by its pollution.
Forgive us for thinking that since we are not farmers who care for large
swaths of land
we have no responsibility for the land you have given us.
Forgive us for thinking that what we do in our small yard
or apartment balcony does not matter,
or that you do not call us to be caretakers and stewards as well.

Creator,
Help us to set to right what we have broken,
to learn how to care for the soil and plants
so that bees may flourish.
Then will these bees return to pollinate plants
that will become food for humans and other of your created beings.
Then will the scraps of that food be returned to nourish the earth,
and that fertile soil will in turn produce plants that the bee needs to thrive.
May we be attentive to every part of your creation
so that all may flourish.

When is the next electronics recycling event?

The Wayne Green Team will host our 10^th annual electronics recycling event on Saturday, September 23, 2023, 8-10am. The event will take place in our usual spot at eastbound 3^rd Street between Lincoln and Pearl, next to City Hall and the Auditorium. Donations are encouraged and there will be fees for CRTs (tube TVs and monitors) and microwaves. Stay tuned for details. If you prefer not to wait, try Nebraska Electronics Recycling & Disposal in Norfolk. Call first at 402-750-6093 to confirm what they will take and if there are any fees.

What kind of electronics do we accept?

We accept TVs, monitors, computers, laptops, floppy discs & CDs, telephones, cell phones, printers, cameras, cords, keyboards & accessories, networking equipment (routers, modems, Ethernet cables), docking stations, stereos, speakers, CD players, gaming stations, chargers and more. Sorry, no batteries, large appliances, or dehumidifiers/humidifiers accepted. See a detailed list below.

Are there any fees?

Yes, we ask for a suggested donation of $10 per carload and $50 per business load of reasonable size. Our priority is to serve households, which have limited access to electronic recycling services. There are specific fees for more hazardous electronics, such as TVs and monitors containing CRTs, and microwaves, which are difficult to recycle. All fees help support City of Wayne community programs focused on waste reduction as part of our overall Zero Waste strategy.

Great Plains Small Church Connection Conference

September 18-20, 2023

Calvin Crest Camp, Fremont Nebraska.

“God’s gifts of grace come in many forms. Each of you has received a gift in order to serve others. You should use it faithfully.” 1 Peter 4:10 NIRV.

The Great Plains Small Church Connection Conference, is designed for leaders in small church ministry. With an emphasis on support, fellowship and learning, this annual event, held at Calvin Crest Camp, Conference and Retreat Center, is a great way to learn and grow in community. The Conference is planned by a team of pastors and laity that are intimately acquainted with small church ministry. The time together involves worship, plenary sessions and a host of smaller group learning sessions on a variety of relevant topics. This year’s them is Grace-Action Required, based on 1^st Peter 4:10 NIRV.

The Great Plains Small Church Connection, formerly Great Plains Wee Kirk, is a non-denominational ministry that provides opportunities for pastors and lay leaders of smaller membership churches to find ideas for ministry in their contexts, to experience encouragement, and to have their souls fed.

From the Pastor…..

I recently read a story about a mother’s encouragement for her child. Pauline Einstein received a note from her son’s elementary school teacher saying the boy was too dumb to learn and wasn’t going to amount to anything in his life. Rather than accept the teacher’s assessment Pauline told her son he was so smart his teachers could no longer teach him. The determined mother bought several books and started teaching her son. Pauline Einstein didn’t give up, she believed in her son’s abilities and that he was going to change the world. Pauline’s intuition was correct, Albert Einstein became one of the most famous physicists of the 20^th century.[*]

After his mother’s death, Albert found the teacher’s note from so many years before. Tears filled his eyes, not out of hurt for the words written but for the love and compassion his mother had for him, for the words of encouragement and support she offered. (theodysseyonline.com) Pauline Einstein’s is an excellent example of how someone’s encouragement can change a life, in her case her son Albert. Encouragement breathes life into our souls and can make a difference in each of our lives.

We meet another example of an encourager in the book of Acts by the name of Joseph. Acts describes him, ^“Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”)….” (Acts 4:36). We learn from this passage several things about Barnabas that he is a Levite, meaning he’s from a priestly family. He is from Cyprus and that Barnabas is his nickname, which means “Son of Encouragement.” His nickname was given to him by the apostles, and it stuck. Barnabas was a quiet but important force in the early church, giving of his time and resources and supporting others in ministry.

Most of us know the story of Saul, a persecutor of Christians until he met Jesus on the road to Damascus. As a result of his radical transformation Saul was changed from a persecutor of the faith to proclaiming faith in Jesus Christ. Christians were terrified of Saul, renamed as Paul, they struggled to believe his transformation was authentic. Scripture tells us Barnabas introduced Saulto the apostles and explained “… how Saul on his journey had seen the Lord and that the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had preached fearlessly in the name of Jesus” (Acts 9:27, NIV). Barnabas must have taken time to listen to Saul’s story, to recognize the change in Paul’s focus and faith. God used Barnabas to encourage Saul to become a leader in the early church and for the disciples to accept him as a leader.

What if Barnabas had not been the “son of encouragement” but a “son of discouragement”? Maybe Paul, would have failed to connect to the apostles and Paul would have never made multiple journeys sharing his faith, preaching, teaching, and planting seeds of faith in many places.

I recently came across the website of Jim D. Akers, a speaker and author who had written and posted an article entitled, “5 Qualities You Need to Be a Great Encourager” (https://jimdakers.com/2016/08/05/5-qualities-you-need-to-be-a-great-encourager). Akers comments that these qualities can be developed and nurtured in each of our lives. We can see how Barnabas embodied these qualities in his life and ministry.

#1—A Genuine Heart for People.

Encouragers demonstrate a genuine heart for people, as well as real and loving concern for others. Encouragers are keenly aware of when changing conditions and circumstances ignite fear, break hearts, or rob someone of their passion. The condition of your heart is a measure of your willingness and capacity to encourage yourself and others. Real encouragement is heartfelt, Barnabas not only encouraged his companions John Mark and Paul in their ministries, he also encouraged the church in Jerusalem by selling some of his personal property and giving the proceeds to the church (Acts 4:37).

#2—An Empathetic Ear

Great encouragers consistently seek to understand people, they listen actively and with empathy. Meaningful encouragement is grounded in understanding—being able to accurately interpret what other people are saying. Encouragers are as comfortable with your fears and failures as they are with your hopes and dreams. Barnabas was able to be the conduit between Paul and the early leaders of the church who were very suspicious of this one-time persecutor who was now proclaiming faith in Jesus Christ. Surely Barnabas had to listen not just to Paul’s words, but also to his heart about the experience that changed his life.

#3—An Eye for Potential

Encouragers see people’s untapped potential because they don’t just see you where you are but have a vision of where you can go. By looking at people as work-in-progress they can provide mentoring that enables the discovery and development of one’s unique gifts and talents. John Mark was mentored and encouraged by his cousin, Barnabas, in ministry.

#4—A Consistent Source of Hope

Encouragers see circumstances and conditions as changeable. They are prayerful problem-solvers and help create solutions and pursue positive change. They know that resistance and failure are the inevitable companions of lofty goals and dreams and consistently deliver words of hope that support others to the finish line. Even when John Mark left working with Paul and Barnabas for a time Barnabas encouraged him to return to ministry.

#5—Setting a Positive and Inspiring Example

Barnabas was a great encourager, comfortable with a variety of people and roles. Great encouragers are pictures of humility, authenticity, compassion, and action. An encourager is consistently the same publicly, privately, and personally.

Every important race in life will bring us face-to-face with adversity, resistance, and challenges. While encouragement does not guarantee one immediate relief or victory it serves to move us towards creating a pattern of increasing effectiveness and impact.

Barnabas’ encouragement helped move Paul from the sidelines of Christianity to a key mission to the Gentiles. No doubt hearing words of encouragement made a great difference in Paul’s life or in John Mark’s life. Barnabas didn’t care who got the glory, he cared about building God’s Kingdom and encouraging God’s people.No doubt, Barnabas’ life reflected what he saw and experienced in his relationship with God and he set a great example in nurturing others through words and acts of encouragement. Never underestimate the power of encouragement. You can also become an encourager and make a difference in your life and the lives of others.

Runza and Wayne Salvation Army Unit join forces for “Christmas in July” Fundraiser

The Wayne Salvation Army unit is pleased to be working with our local Runza on a “Christmas in July” event said chairperson, Pastor Teresa Bartlett. Tuesday, July 11^th between 5:00 and 8:00 p.m. Runza will donate 15% of their sales to the Wayne Salvation Army Unit. The focus of this fundraiser is supporting the Wayne Salvation Army’s school supply give away event to be held on August 14^th. Join us in any manner; eat in, drive through or carry out and help us meet the needs of Wayne students.

The Salvation Army reinvests donations raised from fundraising such as the seasonal Red Kettle Campaign into the community through various projects such as the Back-to-School project. The Salvation Army Unit also receives support from the Wayne Community Chest. BASKET DONATIONS REQUESTED FOR CALVIN CREST FUN DAY AUCTION

Calvin Crest will have a “Basket Auction” on Family Fun Day, August 19^th. This has taken the place of the quilt auction they used to hold every August. Organizers are asking each church to donate one or two baskets.

FOOD PANTRY & BACKPACK NEWS 2023

The food pantry has served over 100 requests so far this year. The Backpack Program has served approximately 5,000 food bags in the 2022/23 academic year. We serve the Wayne Community Schools, St. Mary’s and Tower Schools. The program continues this summer. We appreciate donations such as individually wrapped packages of nutritious food & snacks or financial donations. From the Pastor…

Most of us when visiting somewhere new have felt anxious, uncertain, like an outsider, perhaps even unwelcome. There are other times when we feel comfortable, non-anxious, we feel like we belong. What is the difference between those two settings? What gives you a sense of belonging? Does belonging bring to mind a place, family, biological or chosen, or friends? Is belonging being called by a nickname only those who love you use? Who are your people? Who would inconvenience themselves to care for you, who has your back? Who are the ones to whom you belong?

The dictionary describes belonging as a close or intimate relationship, a feeling of security. Belonging is complex, it is more than hospitality and a friendly welcome which is extended from host to guest, it’s when the guest no longer feels like a guest, but a member of the “family.”

The website belonging-project.com suggests reasons for the importance of belonging; “Belonging matters because it is integral to so many other needs in the human heart: to be seen, heard, affirmed, included, and chosen. In fact, belonging is vital not just for thriving but for surviving. Failed belongingness is a key component of suicidal ideation. To belong is to believe we are inextricably bound to others (in the spirit of Ubuntu) so belonging nurtures the recognition that my well-being is caught up in yours. Giving birth to belonging is necessary for so many other aspects of human flourishing: curiosity, creativity, courage, compassion.” Dustin Benac writes in the April issue of Presbyterians Today that “Belonging is the question of our generation, and so many of our communities are silently suffocating because they lack the belonging, they need to survive much less flourish.” When you belong to a family, a group, a church, or a club you feel like you “fit in” that you are able to offer your skills and gifts, for the good of the group as well as acknowledge your own faults, all this leads to the flourishing of the individual and the group.

In Paul’s letter to the church at Ephesus (Ephesians 2:19-22 ESV) he gave an image of belonging as community writing; “To the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.” The temple is not just one stone, but many stones, built on the Cornerstone of Jesus Christ, each stone important to the whole and provides strength and resiliency. Belonging, like building, requires intention and time, practices such as worship, singing, confession, sharing a meal together can work to develop belonging for members of a faith community, or other group, deepening understanding, and relationships with each other. Belonging is integral in faith communities as faith gives us connection with others and leads to sharing in care and service in our communities and beyond.

Scripture uses images to help explain our relationship with Christ, one of the most familiar is the image of the Shepherd and the sheep. The flock is composed of a variety of sheep that trust and follow the shepherd; they know the shepherd’s voice. The shepherd knows he has a responsibility to care for and protect the sheep. In John 10:14-15 Jesus says, “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.” There is no greater marker of belonging and being loved than that one is willing to lay down one’s life for another. We are the sheep of God’s pasture, the people of God, our relationship is confirmed in baptism and affirmed by Jesus’ death, our sins nailed to the cross with Christ. Scripture says, “You have been bought with a price,” that price was Jesus’ life which he offered willingly for the sins of the world. Christ’s resurrection proclaims God’s power, grace, and love to the world as well as offers an invitation to all who seeking a place of belonging which can be found in a relationship with Christ.

On the Belonging to God[*] website Scott Cormode of Fuller Seminary has written; ‘When I say I belong to God, I mean that I am indelibly etched into God’s family tree. I cannot be removed or cast out. God has adopted me into God’s family. And it is a gift of God, and not the result of some heroic act that merits my inclusion in the royal family. I did nothing to become a part of God’s family and (here’s the best part) I can do nothing to get kicked out of that family. Belonging is the antidote to fear. I know that God promises that nothing can separate any of us from the love that God lavishes on each person in God’s family. And I know that belonging to God gives me an identity that derives from God’s love and specifically not from any action I take to prove myself worthy of that love. In short, I have nothing to fear because I belong to God.” We are loved and we belong, The Presbyterian Book of Confessions contains the Heidelberg Catechism and these words; “I belong—body and soul, in life and in death—not to myself but to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ.” May these words offer each of us a sense of place and belonging. Thanks be to God.

SPRING GATHERING OF HOMESTEAD PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN

The Homestead Presbyterian Women will have their spring gathering “God’s Promises” at Calvin Crest on May 5^th & 6^th with or without over-night options. Friday night begins at 5:00 p.m. with dinner and informal conversations. On Saturday, we will begin at 8:30am with breakfast treats & coffee, followed by a program of communion, and speakers: Louise Van Poll – Synod PW Moderator and her experience as a GA Commissioner; Nancy Sloan – Homestead PW Secretary speaking on “Jesus, God’s Promises Fulfilled; Rev. Jane Holtzclaw – Homestead PW Coordinator of Literature & Resources with an overview of next Horizon’s Bible Study. All those interested may speak with Pastor Teresa concerning the details.

GRADUATION SUNDAY – MAY 7^th

Join us on Sunday, May 7^th as we recognize our FPC senior graduate Braydn McCorkindale, who will be graduating from Wayne High School. Braydn plans to attend UNL and pursue a degree in Actuarial Science. Following the service, there will be a time of fellowship. All are welcome!
Congratulations also to Solomon Peitz graduating from Doane University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. We wish him every success!
Sydney Story will graduate from Creighton University School of Law and will be move with her family back to Wayne, Nebraska. Welcome home, Sydney!

MOTHER’S DAY – MAY 14, 2023

Happy Mother’s Day – Thank-you to every woman for the many roles you play – whether as mother, spouse, employee, employer, mentor, grandmother, friend, role model, spiritual friend. Not all women are mothers, but all of us have a mother – if your mother has been an example of faith and grace in your life give thanks and let her know how much you appreciate her. If this Mother’s Day you are missing a special woman in your life- give thanks for all that woman was to you, whether she was a wife, teacher, grandmother, mother or friend. Each of us, women and men should do our best to reflect the love and grace of God to those around us.

The Presbyterian Church (USA) has four annual special offerings; One Great Hour of Sharing, Christmas Joy, Pentecost, Peace and Global witness. FPC has participated with the One Great Hour of Sharing at Easter and Christmas Joy for many years. The Pentecost offering will be collected on May 28^th, Pentecost Sunday.

Each year on Pentecost Sunday, we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit and the birthday of the church. The Holy Spirit connects us with the church of the past, continues to inspire the church of today, and points us to the church of the future.

The Pentecost offering is focused on the youth of the church. Since the Pentecost Offering started in 1998, Presbyterians have raised more than $16 million for ministries that benefit younger members of God’s family. Presbyterians believe we are called to support and care for young people to help them build a solid foundation of faith. Gifts to the Pentecost Offering connect with God’s hope and future, supporting ministries with children, youth and young adults helping them grow in faith, so they may build the church of the future.

Each participating congregation keeps 40% of funds raised to initiate or support programs for young people in their communities or for events or projects that are youth related. The FPC Session decided our offering will go to Calvin Crest Camp in Fremont. The camp has been and continues to be important in the lives of many of our FPC family. The remaining 60% is used by the Presbyterian Mission Agency to support children-at-risk, youth, and young adult ministries. When we all do a little it adds up to a lot, thank-you for your generosity in the Pentecost offering.

JOYCE VOYLES

Joyce (Anhalt) Voyles, age 85, of Wayne, NE passed away Sunday, April 2, 2023 at Good Samaritan Society of Canton, SD. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Wayne and at one time was very active in the Presbyterian Women’s group and knitted many hats for the Coat Closet.

Services:

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 24th at 10:30 AM at First Presbyterian Church in Wayne, NE.
A Celebration of Joyce’s Life will be held on Saturday, June 24th at 4:00 PM at 46888 274th St. Lennox, SD.

Local arrangements are with Hasemann Funeral Home of Wayne.

LAWN MOWING

We thank the Galles family for volunteering to mow the church lawn this summer. Thanks also to John Fuelberth and Mark Hammer for agreeing to mow for the month of May. There are still two weeks at the end of July that need to be covered, and then more dates beginning in September moving into the fall that will need to be filled. GRIEF & LOSS COMMUNITY SUPPORT GROUP

FREE PIANO IN FELLOWSHIP HALL

First Presbyterian has received the gift of an electric keyboard from Jay and Jane O’Leary in memory of their sons, Jed and JD. Thank you, Jane and Jay O’Leary, for your generosity. The Session determined with the gift of the keyboard we will no longer need the Acrosonic brand piano currently in Fellowship Hall. The piano is in good useable condition; however, it will likely need tuning after moving. The Session will give the piano to any member of the congregation at no charge. The recipient must remove the piano from the property. Please speak to Pastor Teresa if you are interested in the piano.

LIVING LAST SUPPER DRAMATIZATION AT OSLC

All are invited to join Our Savior Lutheran Church in Wayne Thursday, April 6^th at 7:00 p.m. for a dramatization of Leonardo da Vinci’s painting of the Last Supper. The presentation is put on by Our Savior Lutheran Church members and friends of the congregation. This will be a meaningful addition to your Holy Week. Communion will be celebrated.

The One Great Hour of Sharing is the church saying, “We’ll be there when you need us.” Since 1949, Presbyterians have joined with millions of other Christians through One Great Hour of Sharing to share God’s love with people experiencing need. From the Pastor

This year our Lenten study was “The Way, Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus.” The video series took us to various places in the Holy Land, the Jordan River, Capernaum, and Jesus’ home during his ministry. We learned how mountains were important in the life of the Israelites as a place to meet God and played a role in Jesus’ prayer life as well as his teaching. We learned about fishing on the Sea of Galilee and the life of fisherman in the first century. On the final evening we visited Samaria where Jesus ministered to those on the margins of society.

Sunday, April 2^nd is Palm Sunday when we will remember Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem, the final stop on his earthly journey. Scripture tells us that the sound of voices singing Hosanna and waving of palm branches would soon turn to shouts of crucify him.

Rev. Adam Hamilton was the author and narrator of the video series and study guide of “The Way, Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus.” Hamilton writes that as Christians we are defined by words that indicate that we walk in the footsteps of Jesus. Words describe who you are and what you do, such as son, daughter, sibling, parent, teacher etc., as well as characteristics you possess. Do the words which describe you include loving, peaceful, patient, joyful, faithful, good, gentle and disciplined? Does your list also include Christian or disciple?

Words are only one way we are defined; another part of your identity is the story of who you are. Every family as well as individual has stories of their lives, including growing up, school years, special events and many more stories. Stories of good and bad things which happen in this messed-up and chaotic world.

The story that defines us as Christians is the Resurrection, it is the most important story of all. The Resurrection means that the crucifixion was not the end of the story, rather it was the beginning. Because of the resurrection we know that even during sorrow Jesus is with us and will guide us through our challenges. We can have confidence that sorrow and suffering are not the end of the story. When Jesus died and rose from the dead, he changed our stories forever.

Rev. Hamilton wrote, “The cross leads me to gratitude and awe. It leads me to a love of Christ and a deep desire to follow and live for him. I want to walk in his footsteps. I want to live as a citizen of his kingdom. I want to love as he loved. I want to practice his way.” Thanks to Jesus we have a story to tell, of how Jesus went to the cross for each of us-our sins were nailed to the cross with him. The story of Easter is that Christ overcame death for all of us. Christ offers love and forgiveness, compassion to those around him and to all who continue to follow in his footsteps.

Our local Runza Restaurant is hosting a special fund-raiser for the Wayne Food Pantry & Backpack Program on Tuesday, April 25^th. Jodi Pulfer will be representing the Wayne Food Pantry for an interview with KTCH announcer Aaron Scheffler during the 11:00am hour. Please support us by making plans to pick up Runza for lunch or dinner that day!

GRADUATION SUNDAY – MAY 7^th

Join us on Sunday, May 7^th as we recognize our FPC senior graduate Braydn McCorkindale, who will be graduating from Wayne High School. Braydn plans to attend UNL and pursue a degree in Actuarial Science. Following the service, there will be a time of fellowship. All are welcome!
Congratulations also to Solomon Peitz graduating from Doane University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. We wish him every success!
Sydney Story will graduate from Creighton University School of Law and will be move with her family back to Wayne, Nebraska. Welcome home, Sydney!

CONGREGATIONAL SURVEY

The Session is seeking to gain information from the congregation about the effectiveness of the sound system and if changes might assist those who have hearing difficulties in the sanctuary. The initial survey was distributed with the March 26^th bulletin and several responses were received, thanks to all who participated at that time. However, the Session felt that the sample was too small to be a good representation of the congregation. Thus we will do an email survey, please watch for survey toward the middle of April, those who already completed the survey don’t need to complete another one. Even if you don’t currently have any issues with hearing in the sanctuary, a response is appreciated to broaden the sample and help the Session with the assessment. Thank-you for your participation.

SPRING GATHERING OF HOMESTEAD PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN

The Homestead Presbyterian Women will have their spring gathering “God’s Promises” at Calvin Crest on May 5^th & 6^th with or without over-night options. Friday night begins at 5:00 p.m. with dinner and informal conversations. On Saturday, we will begin at 8:30am with breakfast treats & coffee, followed by a program of communion, and speakers: Louise Van Poll – Synod PW Moderator and her experience as a GA Commissioner; Nancy Sloan – Homestead PW Secretary speaking on “Jesus, God’s Promises Fulfilled); Rev. Lenten Poem

Lent is a time to take time to let the power of our faith story take hold of us,
a time to let the events get up and walk around in us,
a time to intensify our living unto Christ,
a time to hover over the thoughts of our hearts,
a time to place our feet in the streets of Jerusalem

or to walk along the sea and listen to his Word,
a time to touch his robe and feel the healing surge through us,
a time to ponder and a time to wonder….
Lent is a time to allow a fresh new taste of God!
Perhaps we’re afraid to have time to think,
for thoughts come unbidden.
Perhaps we’re afraid to face our future
knowing our past.
Give us courage, O God,
to hear your Word
and to read our living into it.
Give us the trust to know we’re forgiven
and give us the faith
to take up our lives and walk.

The Way: Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus

Wednesday Evening Services for Lent

The earliest Disciples of Christ were called followers of The Way. It is believed they referred to themselves as followers of the Way because of Jesus’ statement in John 14:6 that He is “the way and the truth and the life.” Peter refers to Christianity as “the way of truth” (2 Peter 2:2). The writer of Hebrews says that Jesus’ broken body is the “new and living way” for us to enter the Most Holy Place (Hebrews 10:19–20).

Christianity is both a journey and the path you walk on. It’s not static but in constant motion; it’s not just one choice but a lifetime of choices. Not one of us have reached our destination, our best life, our God-given potential, but we are always on the way and called to make a way for others to join us. “Come follow me,” Jesus said to his first disciples, he says the same to us today (Matthew 4:19). It’s a walk with Jesus and we’re all on the way. It’s not always easy but it’s always that simple.

During this Lenten season we will follow in the footsteps of Jesus from his baptism to the temptations to the heart of his ministry, including the people he loved, the parables he taught, the enemies he made, and the healing he brought. This year’s Lenten study was written by and the video excerpts narrated by Pastor Adam Hamilton. Using historical information, archaeological data, and stories of the faith, we’ll go with Hamilton to the Holy Land as he retraces the life and ministry of Jesus Christ through the footsteps of Jesus. Please join us at 7:00 p.m. each Wednesday evening through March.

March 8^th – Healing Ministry – Capernaum

March 15^th – Proclaiming the Kingdom – The Mountains

March 22^nd – Calming the Story – The Sea of Galilee

Lenten Soup and Sandwich suppers will begin on Wednesday, March 1^st and continue until March 30th. Soup suppers will begin at 6:00 p.m. followed by our Lenten worship service at 7:00 p.m. Sign-up on the sheet in Fellowship Hall to bring soup, sandwiches, dessert or other items for the meal.

Psalm 77:12-15 NRSV

The following meditation, based on Psalm 77, is adapted from the book “Living into Lent” by Donald K. McKim.

“One part of our Lenten journey is to ponder who God is and what God has done. This had been part of the journey of faith for the people of God from the beginning. The psalmist recalls God’s mighty deeds for the people of Israel in Psalm 77. Through all the zigs and zags of Israel’s history- and the psalmist’s own history – there is the recognition that God has been there. God has been present, and God has acted. The psalmist declares: ”I will mediate on all your work, and muse on your mighty deeds” (Psalm 77:12).

The season of Lent gives each of us opportunities to explore deeper dimensions of our faith. We meditate on the Word of God in Scripture, through which we encounter who God is and the ways God has and is acting in the world. We meditate on our faith, what we believe. We reflect on our lives and the many ways faith affects our lives every day. Our proneness to idolatry, to temptation, and to all the dangers and snares we encounter are met by the continuing “mighty deeds” of God. We can be attentive to God’s “mighty deeds” in acts and events both great and small which include helping us turn from temptations and follow as disciples. We realize, in faith, that God is with us and God sees us through the various difficulties we encounter.

God meets us in Jesus Christ, sustains us, guides us, and by grace brings us to where God wants us to be. As we meditate on the nature of faith, we will also experience the comforts and joys of faith, and a sense of God’s guidance for our lives even as we face whatever comes our way. May each of us experience as did the Psalmist: “… the God who works wonders” (Psalm 77:14).”

ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING

For more than 70 years, One Great Hour of Sharing has provided us a way to share God’s love with our neighbors in need. In fact, OGHS is the single, largest way Presbyterians come together every year to work toward a better world.

The three programs supported by One Great Hour of Sharing – Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, the Presbyterian Hunger Program, and Self-Development of People – all work in different ways to serve individuals and communities in need. From initial disaster response to ongoing community development, their work fits together to provide people with safety, sustenance, and hope.

First Presbyterian will be collection the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering on Easter Sunday, April 9^th and April 16^th.

First Presbyterian has received the gift of an electric keyboard from Jay and Jane O’Leary in memory of their sons, Jed and JD. Thank you Jane and Jay O’Leary for your generosity. The keyboard has quite a bit of flexibility in musical styles and sounds. The Session determined with the gift of the keyboard we will no longer need the Acrosonic brand piano currently in Fellowship Hall. The piano is in good useable condition; however, will likely need tuning after moving. The Session will give the piano to any member of the congregation at no charge. The recipient must remove the piano from the property. Please speak to Pastor Teresa if you are interested in the piano. If no one in the congregation claims the piano we will advertise it more widely to find it a new home.

As we watch the images and continue to receive news about the aftermath of the 7.8 on the Richter scale earthquake that hit near the border between Syria and Turkey, are invited to join us in prayer for all the communities impacted by this disaster. PDA has already reached out to our partners in the areas affected by the earthquakes. Along with our prayers, we have offered our support and will be providing initial grants to attend to immediate unmet needs.

FROM THE PASTOR……

The prophet Isaiah served as a mouthpiece for the Lord during one of the most trying times in the history of the Israelites. The setting for the 43^rd chapter of Isaiah is the captivity of the Israelites in Babylon. The people felt discouraged, defeated, deflated, and depressed. The Israelites were at their lowest point when God sent word through the prophet Isaiah. God knew the people needed some reassurance and their memory jogged that God was their Creator – the One who made them out of nothing. The Israelites were reminded that God was their Lord, the Holy One, the promise keeper. God also reminded them of the great things done for their ancestors, like being brought out of bondage in Egypt. Leaving Egypt in the middle of the Red Sea, God made a highway for the people and a graveyard for their enemies who were pursing them. God reminded the people not to be afraid for they were precious and beloved by God. God was present with them encouraging them to look forward not backward. God said to the people,

Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.
See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness
and streams in the wasteland. Isaiah 43: 18-19

“Forget about your past. Forget about the former things. Don’t think about it.” God seems to be saying “I’m about to do something brand new. Let go of the past and look forward because God is more interested in your future than your past.”

Sometimes it is a challenge to let go of the past as it holds memories both good and bad. We will be happy to release memories of a pandemic which changed all our lives. It’s harder to let go of memories of a congregation with lots of children and a full house for Sunday worship. In the current culture we can lament that faith doesn’t hold the same place that it once did. We know that some look for the support and fellowship of religious communities in other types of groups. We can feel discouraged because we’re a small congregation however, according to PC(USA) 2021 statistics the median membership of congregations in the denomination is 71 with an average attendance of 35.[*] Let’s take God’s words to the Israelites to heart, let’s look forward rather than backward, let’s see what is and what might be rather than what was.

New things are happening here at FPC. I’m happy that Sunday School has been restarted, we have a good group of teachers and volunteers. We can look forward to the fall and hopefully add some children to the roster. We had a baptism January 15^th the first in quite a while. We installed a new class of deacons and elders on January 22^nd. Our CoffeeHouse service will begin February 19^th and will be the third Sunday of each month. The service provides a great time of thought-provoking discussion and offers each of us an opportunity to invite someone to join us for worship. Each of us is a part of this faith community and we need to encourage and invite others to reinvigorate our community in mission, and worship. We want to be sure to welcome visitors warmly whether they are coming for worship, or to use the Coat Closet or Food Pantry.

Even though we are in midwinter I feel a sense of optimism about these new and renewed activities of the congregation. A favorite hymn of mine was written by Natalie Sleeth entitled Hymn of Promise. It is a contemporary hymn composed in 1986. The last half of the first verse says.

In the cold and snow of winter there’s a spring that waits to be,

Unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see.

Bulbs planted in the fall remain out of sight until the right combination of sun, rain and warmth trigger the new growth to break through the ground exposing a small green tip. I feel a sense of anticipation and newness that perhaps like that bulb responding to the warmth of the spring sun and rain, God is at work in our midst and we are seeing the first hints of new growth. Let’s keep cultivating and planting new ideas and watch for the new growth which will be revealed in God’s time.

The Session at their January meeting and set a goal for FPC to host a special event of some kind quarterly. This would be an event we could invite the community to participate in perhaps a special musical event, instrumental group, soloist or quartet, speaker or other types of event. Feel free to share with Pastor Teresa or a Session member if you know of a group or individual we might invite for these special events. The Session will make the final determination regarding quarterly events. By welcoming others into the church for these events, it will give the congregation the opportunity to meet and greet members of the community and an opening to share the mission of FPC.

This year’s online devotional from Presbyterians Today is entitled “Kindling the Flame of Love-A Celtic Advent Devotional.” The devotional was written by the Rev. Dr. Maureen Paterson, associate pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Basking Ridge, New Jersey. Rev. Dr. Paterson has a keen interest in Christian spirituality and thus Celtic spirituality is the focus of this year’s devotional.

Rev. Dr. Patterson writes in the introduction to the devotional “Many don’t realize anymore, but Advent used to be longer. In the fifth century, the Celts began observing the holy season on Nov. 15, which gave them 40 days to Dec. 24 to prepare to welcome the Christ Child. The 40 days also mirrored the Lenten time of journeying — and repentance and reflection. Forty is a significant number in Scripture. In Genesis, we remember the 40 days and nights of rain that flooded the earth before God’s promise was revealed. In Deuteronomy, we read of Moses pleading with God on Israel’s behalf for 40 days and nights. The wilderness journey from captivity to the Promised Land took 40 years. In the New Testament, we see Jesus being tempted in the desert for 40 days. There are also 40 days between the resurrection and the accounts of Jesus’ ascension. It is not difficult then to see why the earliest Christians took the number 40 as an appropriate number of days to be in preparation for life-changing events—whether that was preparing for Easter or Christmas or the consecration of a new religious order. In our modern times, it also seems appropriate that we take a little more time on our spiritual journey during one of the most hectic and stressful parts of the year. In the context of the U.S., where Thanksgiving typically occurs just a few days before the start of traditional Advent, it seems like we finish with that holiday celebration and then sprint toward the finish line of Christmas. Beginning the practice of Advent on Nov. 15 gives us more breathing room, space to allow God’s presence and the Holy Spirit to dwell within us. It allows us to begin our own spiritual practices a little earlier to center ourselves in God’s Word and open ourselves up to God’s call upon our lives.” You are encouraged to use this devotional material for personal growth the link is Advent-Calendar-2022.pdf. Other seasonal materials include the quarterly devotional magazine “These Days” available in Fellowship Hall or at the back of the sanctuary. It is hoped you might find one or more of these devotional materials helpful during this season.

The following is Paterson’s devotional from November 25^th entitled “Seeing Christ in All” and based on Matthew 25:44-4-Then they will also answer, “Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison and did not take care of you?’ Then he will answer them, ‘Truly, I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.”

Paterson writes, “When I was training for ministry within the Church of Scotland, one of the requirements was a number of church and community internships. One of mine was in the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh, which was built in 1729 and had carved above two doorways, “I was a stranger and ye invited me in” and “I was sick and ye visited me.” It was sobering every time I walked through those doors to be reminded of this Scripture and the reality that not only was I a representative of the church when I visited patients, but more importantly I should be approaching each bedside as if I was visiting Christ himself. If we truly live this passage from Matthew’s Gospel, we will find ourselves challenged how we look at everyone we meet and every encounter we have. It doesn’t allow us to be nice to the people we like and rude to others. It forces us to look at everyone with the eyes of Christ and not make value judgments based on their race, gender, economic status or any kind of personal preferences. And that is often difficult. It is hard to hold onto this principle when we are busy, or tired or having a bad day. It is all too easy to take our frustrations and anger out on the first person we come across and not recognize the Christ that dwells within them. Who are the “least of these” in your life? Who do you have a hard time recognizing the Christ within? How might you be more mindful of this scriptural mandate and be more intentional in your daily activities when encountering strangers or those people you find most difficult? May we each try to slow down enough during this busy holiday season, to look within the other to see Christ and recognize each person as made in God’s image. Imagine how different our world would be if we did.”

Prayer:

Creator God, we know you made all of us in your image and call us to extend your love and grace to one another. We confess that often we are too busy or self-obsessed to truly notice the Christ in one another. Open our eyes, our hearts and our minds to your presence and teach us to love as you loved. Amen

MITTEN TREE

The Deacons request your help in decorating our mitten tree this holiday season with gloves, hats, scarves and mittens. The tree will be in Fellowship Hall.

WAYNE FOOD PANTRY

We are expecting a very busy holiday season at the Food Pantry. With gifts from the community we were able to provide 14 baskets to Wayne Community School families. 14 Head-Start families received grocery store vouchers. We hope to provide about the same number this Christmas-time. We will also be distributing nearly 140 bags with peanut butter, jelly & a loaf of bread to the children on the Wayne Schools Backpack Program. Please consider donating to the Food Pantry. CHRISTMAS JOY OFFERING

The Christmas Joy Offering has been a cherished Presbyterian tradition since the 1930s. The Offering distributes gifts equally to the Assistance Program of the Board of Pensions and to Presbyterian-related schools and colleges equipping communities of color. The Assistance Program provides critical financial support to church workers and their families. Presbyterian-related schools and colleges provide education and leadership development while nurturing racial and ethnic heritage. This has been a Presbyterian commitment for nearly 140 years. We will receive the Christmas Joy offering on Sunday, December 18^th, however you may make your gift any time before the end of the year. Please note on your check or offering envelope that the gift is for the Christmas Joy offering.

WAYNE COUNTRYVIEW CHAPEL: Pastor will lead a chapel service at Country View on Sunday, January 22^nd beginning at 1:30pm.

TAX REMINDER

All donations for the 2022 calendar year need to be to Anita Fuelberth no later than Friday, December 30, 2022 for tax purposes. Any mailed donations must be postmarked no later than Wednesday, December 28^th, 2022.

COFFEE HOUSE TO RETURN IN 2023

The Session was pleased with the reception that Coffee House worship received over the course of our three services. The response from many in the congregation has been positive. At the November Session meeting it was decided that we would hold Coffee House worship once a month, with the exception of December, on the 3rd Sunday. The first Coffee House in 2023 will be January 15^th. Jane has already been in contact with people about topics and leadership for the discussion portion of Coffee House. Please contact her to volunteer or share ideas for topics. We will also need volunteers for treats and to make the coffee so please watch for the sign-up sheet to volunteer. We look forward to more discussion about the Scriptures’ and how they impact our lives. Coffee House begins January 15^th.

SESSION

The Session will not meet in December.
The Session will gather for a retreat **Saturday, January 28^th**(please note date change)^, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for a time of training and planning for 2023. All Session members including the incoming class of elders should plan to attend. We will be reviewing polices of the congregation as well as planning for communion, monthly devotions and organizing Session teams.

October has gone so quickly it seems but a blur. We find ourselves on the cusp of November moving ever so quickly toward the end of the year. In a society that seems to always be rushing to the next thing, it is good to slow down and reflect, to offer our thanks and praise to God. I came across the following devotion on the website God’s Protected Harbor. I really enjoyed the reflection and hope you will as well.

“During this holiday season when we reflect on everything God has placed in our lives, we have the unique opportunity to place emphasis on giving thanks. Believing in God allows us to be thankful when things go well and patient when things go against us. It is crucial at the times when things are going against us to thank God for granting us the learning experience he has placed in front of us. Sometimes at the moment, it is hard to see God’s greater plan for you and to trust in him. Remaining patient during times of adversity allows us to completely retain the lesson that God is trying to teach us. Paul sums things up this way. He says it is God’s will for us to be thankful “in all circumstances.” Well, it may help to note that Paul is not saying we should be thankful for all circumstances, but in them. When things seem to go against us, God expects us to be grateful that his hand holds us and helps us to endure under the strain. That’s a big challenge – to look for reasons to be thankful when the going is tough. Sometimes it can be equally difficult for us to be thankful when things are going well. The very nature of human beings, even if we are Christian, is to overlook the crowd of God’s good gifts to us every day. Here’s a great exercise you can do today: sit still where you are and exercise the gift of noticing. Notice what you see, what you have, and who is with you. Notice the color, beauty, and variety around you. Keep noticing and make a list of the gifts you notice. Then give thanks to God, the great giver!”[*]

“Today we thank you God for everything you have placed in our lives. We thank you for the good and the bad. We thank you for allowing us to be patient through the bad in our life so that we may learn what it is you want us to learn from the situation. We ask that today you give us the great gift of being able to notice all of your gifts. Open our hearts to a spirit of thanksgiving we pray. Amen.”

Happy birthday to Layla Bray Story, who was born early in the morning in mid-October. She entered the world at 21.5” and 7lbs 15oz Congratulations and best wishes to Layla’s parents: Nate & Sydney Story, and her proud grandparents: Mark & Gail McCorkindale.

COMMUNION

We will celebrate the Lord’s Supper on November 6^th with Shari Dunklau as the communion elder. We will celebrate Communion on December 4^th.

COFFEEHOUSE WORSHIP CONTINUES ON NOVEMBER 13^th

We will meet in Fellowship Hall, coffee and refreshments will be available as desired throughout the service. Karen Johnson will lead discussion.

CONGREGATIONAL MEETING

The Session has called a congregational meeting for November 13^th following Coffeehouse Worship. At the meeting we will elect a new class of deacons & elders and approve the terms of call for the pastor in 2023. The snow date will be November 20^th.

STEWARDSHIP REMINDER

Members and friends of the congregation should have received a year to date statement of giving for 2022 and a 2023 intention of giving form. If you did not receive this information please contact Anita Fuelberth.

You are asked to prayerfully review your information and return the intention of giving form to Anita Fuelberth right away. You can mail the form to Anita or drop your envelope in the offering box at church. This information is helpful to the Session in planning for 2023. Thank You for your support and dedication to FPC.

DID YOU KNOW?

Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) have become a great way for people 70½ or older to take all or part of their Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from their Traditional IRA. The recent tax code changed the standard deduction for those over 65 to $26,600 for married filing jointly or $13,600 for single filers. Thus for many of us our church pledges will no longer be included in an itemized deduction. However, by making all or part of our pledge a Qualified Charitable Distribution directly from the IRA custodian or trustee to the church the distribution will not be included as taxable income to the IRA owner. Qualified Charitable Distributions can also exceed one’s specific RMD amount and still not be taxed.

While Qualified Charitable Distributions are not complex there are certain requirements and steps that should be followed so check with your tax professional.

due to loss, or want, foul fortune, being born at the wrong place, at the wrong time.

Deacons Coat Giveaway a Success!

….. ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these

October 15^th the FPC Deacons hosted a coat giveaway. In total 79 coats and 87 accessories, such as hats, mittens, gloves, snow pants etc., were given away Saturday and throughout the following week. The Deacons were pleased to have such a good response.

The coat giveaway was a big project and the Deacons were fortunate to have the assistance of several groups. The FCCLA organization from Wayne Community Schools (WCS), Ms. Alina Surber and students, helped the Deacons move coats and racks from the basement into Fellowship Hall to set up for the event. The move to Fellowship Hall allowed more space for coats, volunteers, helpers and clients. Christa Dutcher, Spanish instructor at WCS and her students helped with Spanish translation for clients and some of our posters and forms. The Deacons appreciate the assistance of KTCH in public service announcements about the event as well as the Wayne School District sending information out to families. Thanks to every individual and group who assisted in the Coat Closet giveaway in any manner and helped make it successful.

Due to the success of the giveaway the Coat Closet stock is low. If you would like to donate we always need children’s coats and we are in need of men’s work coats as well as hats, mittens and gloves for all people. The Coat Closet is one way we live into our mission as a Matthew 25 church and address the needs of people in our area.

MITTEN TREE

The Deacons request your help in restocking our glove and mitten inventory. In December we will have a Mitten Tree in Fellowship Hall and ask you to donate gloves and mittens. Your donations of coats, gloves and mittens are welcome anytime.

SALVATION ARMY BELL RINGERS NEEDED

The Wayne Extension Unit of the Salvation Army will be conducting its Annual Bell Ringing Campaign beginning Friday, November 25. The bell ringing campaign is the primary fundraiser for the Salvation Army in Wayne. Bell ringers are needed for 2-hour time slots on Friday or Saturday beginning Thanksgiving weekend to December 16th. Churches, service organizations, youth groups and others are invited to participate in the bell ringing project. The only requirements are to be friendly and welcoming, dress warmly and smile easily and say thank-you, oh yeah, a little wrist action with a bell. We can fill shorter time slots if we get more volunteers.

Ninety percent (90%) of the funds collected in the bell ringing campaign remain in the community and assist with housing, utilities, medical, transportation and other needs of families and individuals in Wayne. In 2022 the Wayne SA Unit sponsored a back to school drive for school supplies for elementary children. The project was very successful and helped more than 80 children with backpacks and school supplies.

Participation in the Salvation Army bell ringing campaign is one way we can live into our commitment of being a Matthew 25 congregation; as we are reminded in Matthew 25:40; ‘… whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

Please sign-up to ring the Salvation Army Bell this season. The sign-up sheet will be on the Opportunity Table.

ROAD SIDE CLEAN-UP

On October 23rd about 12 FPC members led by John Fuelberth ventured east of Wayne to clean-up our section of Highway 35. The crew battled strong winds that day but the volunteers still managed to gather a pick-up load of trash. Thanks to everyone who joined in this project.

A TIP OF THE HAT

Thank-you to the Galles family who took care of the mowing of the church lawn over the course of the last several months. Thank you also to those who planted flowers and trimmed bushes, plants and trees. Your gifts of time have made sure the church grounds were looking nice for Sunday as well as for other church and community events. Thank-you to each one who gave of their time.

ADVENT CANDLE LIGHTERS NEEDED

Pastor Teresa is looking for couples, families or individuals who would like to assist with lighting the Advent candles during worship in December. All readings will be provided in advance. Your participation in this seasonal tradition will be appreciated. A sign-up sheet will be in Fellowship Hall or you can contact Pastor Teresa.

From the Pastor…

The little “meme” above isn’t new but is an interesting analogy of Christians being like pumpkins. We’re not physically like pumpkins – orange, round and filled with gunk and seeds aplenty. Grace Sanders[*] in her blog article suggests we consider the analogy an encouragement. Sanders’ article “Four reasons why Christians are like pumpkins”shared the following thoughts:

1. We are hand selected.

God hand selects us! We are chosen! Very much like in the verse John 15:16, where Jesus is giving the Vine and the Branches illustration, reads: “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit – fruit that will last – and so that whatever you ask in my name the father will give you.” – John 15:16

2. We’re washed clean.

We all know how dirty pumpkins can appear at times! In order to clean them, of course we have to wash them! The blood of Jesus washes away our sins, the things that make us as humans unclean. A pumpkin has an inside and an outside. Not only does God wash us clean from the outside, he removes our sin, and in doing that we are washed clean and made new from the inside out. We are not captive to sin, or the shame that comes with it, because through Christ we are made new! “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old has gone, the new is here!” – 2 Corinthians 5:17

God carefully removes our seeds of doubt, hate, and greed. Instead of holding onto these unfruitful seeds, God replaces them with seeds of faith, hope and love.

3. He gives us a smile.

God brings such a joy to our lives, and our smiles are living proof of this. “My lips will shout for joy when I sing praise to you – I whom you have delivered.” – Psalm 71:23

4. He shines through us.

When Christ dwells in us, we shine through to the people around us. Through the darkness, we can reflect His light to glorify our Father. One of my favorite bible verses is found in Matthew 5:16, reading: “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16

No matter whether you celebrate Halloween or you don’t, I hope this analogy encourages you as Halloween approaches. At a time when so many are celebrating darkness and all things scary, you can be a shining light to all believers and unbelievers. Pray for those who do not believe, your friends, family, students or colleagues, and show each of them the love that your Father in Heaven shows us.

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”- John 1:5.

Sander’s words remind us of God’s amazing grace and that when Christ dwells in us, we have love and light to share with others, may we always do so with a smile.

Ready, Set, Brew:

New service brewing this fall – Coffee House Worship

One of the things most people enjoy about worship and fellowship are the relationships which are built with each other and the ways we support each other in faith. In an attempt to deepen and broaden those relationships and our faith, FPC is going to offer a new worship experience, Coffee House. The Session approved this experiment for three weeks: October 23, 30^th and November 13^th.The desire is to offer a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere we will meet in Fellowship Hall around small tables, coffee and refreshments will be available as desired throughout the service.

Yes, it’s different format, however the Old Testament describes places where people gathered and encountered God, stone alters, tabernacles, temples to name a few. The Gospels tell us Jesus worshiped, preached and taught in many places in the synagogues and temples but also in the wilderness, on hillsides and at lakeshores. The first Christians worshiped at the temple, in synagogues, homes, catacombs even prisons. All heaven and earth belong to God, we may worship in any place. The important thing isn’t the place, but the gathering of believers and Christ’s presence among them.

The worship format of Coffee House will be the same as our regular worship however instead of a meditation we will have guided conversation where we learn with and from one another. The format will be similar to the “Meals with Jesus” Lenten series. Jesus taught by asking questions and challenging his disciples and others to think in new ways. We desire to build deeper bonds of relationship as we think and learn together. This is an opportunity to reengage some of our members and youth with a different worship format. It is hoped everyone will engage this experiment with openness. This is a three-week trial; we will be in the sanctuary for communion on November 6^th and in the sanctuary for the Advent season. Plan to join us for Coffee House worship beginning October 23rd.

WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2022

FPC DEACONS TO HOST COAT GIVE-AWAY: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15TH

Saturday, October 15^th, the First Presbyterian Church Deacons will be hosting a coat give away from 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Coats for all ages will be available, the selection will be limited to stock on hand. In addition to coats there is a limited selection of hats, scarves and gloves. Each “shopper” can select one coat and accessories, parents may select for their children. The event is open to all area individuals and families. The Deacon’s will be setting up on Thursday afternoon October 13^th with volunteers. On October 19^th we will return the coats to the basement. If you are able to assist please contact Pastor Teresa.

STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN: OCTOBER 16-30, 2022

FPC Stewardship’s Campaign will begin October 16^th and run through October 30^th. During this time you will receive a mailing from the financial secretary and the Session. It is hoped that you will reflect on the information you receive and consider prayerfully your support of First Presbyterian Church. Your support financially and your presence & encouragement to our Deacons and Elders and staff are particularly always important.

PASTORAL COMMUNITY OUTREACH SERVICES

Pastor Teresa will lead pastoral outreach services at the following locations throughout October:

KINSHIP POINTE CHAPEL: Pastor Teresa will lead a chapel service at Kinship Pointe at 3:30pm on Wednesday, October 5^th.
WAYNE COUNTRY VIEW CHAPEL: Pastor will lead a chapel service at Country View on Sunday, October 16^th beginning at 1:30pm.
RADIO DEVOTIONS: Pastor Teresa will be giving devotions on 104.9 Big Red Country KTCH the week of October 24^th – 28^th at 5:40am.

HIGHWAY CLEAN-UP

Wear your work clothes to worship on Sunday, 10/23/2022. We will go out to our stretch of Highway 35 (mile markers 33-35) after worship to pick up litter.

SESSION

The next session meeting will be held on Monday, October 24^th at 7:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

We need fellowship hosts to prepare refreshments. Please sign up in Fellowship Hall or contact Jenny. Please consider sharing the gift of hospitality.
Greeters & lectors are needed. Please volunteer or say “yes” when asked.

WAYNE FOOD PANTRY SCHOOL BACKPACK PROGRAM UPDATE

The Wayne County Backpack Program provides a weekend supply of nutritious food for children when school lunch and breakfast is unavailable on a weekend. The program began in April of 2013 to assist families whose children may experience food scarcity on the weekends or may have children home alone. At the beginning of each school year letters are sent to families of the Wayne area schools inviting students to participate. The program is completely sponsored by donations to the Wayne County Food Pantry that are specific to the Backpack Program. We do accept donations of any single serve items; however, they must be something that small child can prepare and eat on their own. From late August through late September, the distribution of backpacks has grown to approximately 140 bags distributed weekly. Sites include the Early Learning Center, the Elementary, Junior High, and High Schools, St. Mary’s and Tower School.

DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME

Daylight Saving Time will end on Sunday, November 6, at 2:00am. Don’t forget to set your clocks back one hour, or you’ll have plenty of time for solitary meditation in the sanctuary!

So What Is “Pilgrimage” All About?

Have you heard people talking about “pilgrimage” and wondered what it’s about? You’ve probably heard it is a 3-day renewal or retreat. Maybe you’ve heard it started back in 1948 in Spain and was part of the Roman Catholic Cursillo movement and is now, similar to Walk to Emmaus, Tres Dias and Kairos Prison Ministry. You might have also heard it’s held at Camp Calvin Crest in Fremont, Nebraska. Not too far away that you have to worry about “traveling” but far enough away that you can disconnect from the day to day secular world.

What you probably didn’t hear is you can “Come as You Are”! That’s right, just be yourself and be accepted and loved. You see, God meets you where you are and throughout the weekend surrounds you with His love. You’ll experience grace, music and laughter all while walking the path God has chosen for you.

As good as that all sounds, that’s not even the best part! The weekend has been a wonderful experience for many people and has acted as a stepping stone to help them return to their own environments spiritually nourished and inspired to love one another while continuing to serve the Lord, however that looks for you. Won’t you come join us …….
